The Walk On, by John Feinstein, is about a fourteen-year-old quarterback, Alex Myers, who moves from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania after his parents got divorced. As he is trying out for the Chester Heights football team, he learns that the starting quarterback, Matt Gordon, is the coach’s son and that he, Alex, will probably not get to play all season. Alex feels, however, that he is the best quarterback on the team, but understands that he probably will not get playing time because Coach Gordon favors his son. One of Alex’s favorite coaches is the quarterback coach, Coach Hillier, who is also in charge of the school newspaper.
Alex quickly befriends Jonas Ellington, who is also a new freshman and a talented wide receiver who can run a 4.5-second forty-yard dash. Alex quickly falls in love with Christine Whitford, who works for Coach Hillier and is a reporter for the school’s newspaper. The newspaper gets into some trouble when its reporters write controversial stories about Coach Gordon. Will Alex get the playing time and the respect he deserves?
